After a summer of lovely evening music, the thrush quietly departs for southern climes in the United States and Central America. But the male thrush would never copycat. They almost always answer a rival’s song with a different song of their own. With most birds, the males square off by answering a rival’s song with the same song, perhaps seeing who sings better. In late winter, birds like owls begin breeding and are more easily spotted than in the summer months. House Wrens will gladly use nestboxes, or you may find their twig-filled nests in old cans, boots, or boxes lying around. While spring and fall are the peak migration times, some birds make Ohio their southern home during the winter. Listen for its rush-and-jumble song in summer and you’ll find this species zipping through shrubs and low tree branches, snatching at insects.
